Brightwater Trail, located just off Brightwater Drive in Huntington Beach, offers one of the easier coastal walks in Orange County—the kind of place where you can actually relax instead of constantly managing steep terrain. The trail itself is reasonably flat and well-maintained, which means your dog won’t be struggling and you won’t be either. What makes this worth the trip is the real ocean view you get as you walk, plus you’re right there alongside the Bolsa Chica wetlands. If you’re familiar with the area, you know this stretch of Huntington Beach doesn’t have tons of waterfront access for casual visitors, so having a proper trail here is genuinely useful.
Dogs need to be on leash, which is standard for this kind of preserve area. The path gives you plenty of spots where you can stop, let your dog have a drink from a water bowl you bring along, and just take in what’s around you. The wetlands create a surprisingly quiet atmosphere despite being so close to the city—you’ll see birds, marsh grasses, and that salt-air smell that reminds you why people live here.
The whole experience feels low-key in the best way. It’s not a challenging hike, so it works well if your dog is older, still young and building endurance, or just not the aggressive-trail-runner type. Early morning is probably your best bet if you want fewer people around. Parking is available near Brightwater Drive, though it’s worth arriving early on weekends. Bring water for your dog since there aren’t reliable water sources along the route itself. This is the kind of walk you do when you want to get out with your dog without overthinking it.
