Calero County Park is a sprawling 4,471-acre regional park in the eastern foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, about 30 minutes southeast of downtown San Jose. The landscape here is genuinely diverse—oak woodlands alternate with open grassland, and you get real elevation changes as you work your way up into the foothills. On a clear day, the views across the valley are substantial.

The park’s history adds another layer. It sits on land that was once part of the Pueblo lands of San Jose and the Rancho San Vicente land grant, so there’s genuine historical context to the place beyond just the scenery. That said, what matters most to most visitors is simply that it works well for hiking with your dog.

Dogs need to stay on-leash throughout the park, which is standard for regional parks in Santa Clara County. The trail system is legitimately varied—you can do a short walk through the oak woodlands or commit to a longer loop that climbs into the foothills. The grassy meadows are pleasant in spring, though by summer they dry out considerably. The trails themselves are well-maintained, and you won’t deal with confusing intersections or poor signage.

If you’re thinking about making a longer trip, the park has camping facilities. Being able to camp on-site and spend multiple days exploring different sections of the park is a real draw, especially if you want to spread out your hiking rather than crushing a bunch of elevation gain in one day.

The park gets busy on weekends, particularly in spring and early summer, so if you prefer quieter conditions, aim for a weekday visit. Parking fills up during peak times, though the lot usually isn’t completely full even when the trails themselves are moderately crowded.
