California Labradors, Retrievers & More Rescue operates out of Oceanside as San Diego County‘s fastest-growing dog rescue organization. Since 2011, the all-volunteer nonprofit has pulled more than 12,000 dogs from high-kill shelters and placed them in homes throughout the region. They focus heavily on large dogs, often rescuing animals with serious medical issues or behavioral challenges that other rescues won’t touch. Many of the dogs they save were literally hours away from euthanasia when volunteers intervened.

The rescue takes on cases other organizations turn down. They work with pregnant mothers and nursing litters, senior dogs nobody wants, and animals so traumatized or medically complicated they’d never survive without specialized care. Some arrivals are in terrible shape—emaciated, untreated infections, behavioral problems from abuse. The volunteers provide medical treatment, training, and time to help these dogs become adoptable. It’s not glamorous work. You’re looking at dogs recovering from neglect, learning to trust again, getting healthy enough to handle a home environment.

What makes them effective is their willingness to do the unglamorous rehabilitation. A dog pulled from the streets with an infected wound and fear aggression takes weeks or months to stabilize. The rescue doesn’t rush placement or cut corners because they’re a small nonprofit working on donations. They’re transparent about each dog’s history and needs, which means adoptions actually stick because people go in with realistic expectations.

If you’re looking to adopt in San Diego County and specifically want a larger dog with character and history, they’re worth contacting. They can tell you honestly which dogs do well with other animals, which need experienced owners, and which are ready for a calm family home. Their foster network means they actually know each dog’s personality before adoption, not just kennel behavior.
