Camino Real Off Leash Dog Area sits on the east side of Ventura with enough acreage that dogs can actually build up a run without lapping the same corner four times. The park divides into two sections—one for dogs under 25 pounds, one for larger dogs—which means small dogs get their own space instead of getting steamrolled by the pack. Fencing runs the perimeter, so you’re not fishing your dog out of a drainage ditch mid-visit.
Dogs can roam off-leash throughout both areas, though you’ll want to keep an eye on yours and bring the mandatory leash to enter and exit. There’s a water station on-site, which matters in Ventura’s heat, and shade is scattered but present—not everywhere, so afternoon visits mean your dog will spend time in sun. The ground is a mix of grass and decomposed granite, reasonable on paws even when packed.
The park opens early and closes at dusk, making it accessible before or after work. Weekday mornings tend to be quieter than weekend afternoons, when the place fills with the usual mix of dog owners who actually supervise and those checking their phones. Summer heat brings fewer visitors, which might suit you if you prefer calmer sessions. Camino Real is roughly two miles from downtown Ventura and accessible via Telephone Road, making it easy to slip in without a major detour if you’re already in the area.
