Canyon Acres Trail

Canyon Acres Trail

Canyon Acres Trail

3250 Alta Laguna Blvd., Laguna Beach, California 92651

This short but steep “reverse” hike explores the southwestern corner of Aliso & Wood Canyons Wilderness Park, and it’s one of those trails that packs a lot into a quick outing. The variety of scenery keeps things interesting—you’ll get great ocean views, aerial vistas of Laguna Canyon, and a good look at the characteristic sandstone geology that makes this area distinctive. On clear days you can see all the way to the San Gabriels and Old Saddleback, which is pretty stunning when conditions cooperate.

We did this one on a late afternoon, and it works perfectly for that. Since it’s short enough to squeeze in after work, we could head out without committing our whole evening. The trail also makes for a solid weekend option if you want something manageable that doesn’t require an early start. The sunset views from up there are legitimately worth timing your hike around—the light hits the canyon and ocean in a way that makes you understand why people keep coming back to this spot.

The “reverse” designation refers to the direction you’ll be hiking, and honestly, the steep sections go by pretty quickly once you’re moving. The sandstone formations are interesting to look at as you climb, and they give the whole area a different feel from other Orange County trails. It’s worth bringing water even though it’s short, especially on warmer days. The parking situation is straightforward—you’re looking at the end of Alta Laguna Drive, which is accessible via Park Avenue from the Highway 133 corridor. Just be aware that popular times mean the small lot fills up, so an early start or off-peak timing helps if you want to avoid hunting for a spot.
