Located on the San Diego Coast, Cardiff State Beach has a gently sloping sandy beach with warm water that stays inviting year-round. You’ll find swimming, surfing, and beachcombing all in one spot, with dogs welcome on the sand as long as they’re on a 6-foot leash and under your control at all times.
The beach sits one mile south of Cardiff on Old Highway 101, and it’s become a major draw for surfers throughout San Diego County. Because of that popularity, expect a busy parking lot no matter what season you visit. There is a parking fee, which you can pay at the kiosk near the entrance if someone’s staffing it, or at the automated pay machine in the lot. There are two pay stations—one near the restroom at Cardiff Reef and another near the entrance at the Seaside Parking Lot.
The warm water and gentle slope make this beach accessible for dogs who aren’t strong swimmers, though you’ll want to keep a close eye on your dog since the lot and beach get genuinely crowded, especially on weekends. The surfing crowds mean lots of activity in the water, so if your dog spooks easily, early mornings tend to be quieter. The beach itself is wide enough that even when it’s packed, you can usually find a spot away from the main action if you’re willing to walk a bit.
The parking situation is straightforward once you know where the pay machines are, but on popular summer days and weekends, you might circle for a spot. Bringing cash or a credit card for the automated machine saves time if the kiosk is unstaffed. The combination of good swimming conditions, beachcombing opportunities, and that reliable warm water makes this a solid choice for dogs who like getting wet.
