Castro Crest

1765 Latigo Canyon Rd., Malibu, California 90265

Castro Crest is located 1.4 miles from Latigo Canyon Road up a pleasant section of the Backbone Trail, making it an accessible summit hike for dogs who can handle moderate elevation gain. The crest offers excellent views over Malibu’s Santa Monica Mountains, with the option to continue another half-mile up Castro Peak—though you’ll hit a gate near the top since the summit itself is privately owned and closed to the public. The section of the Backbone Trail between Latigo Canyon and Castro Crest crosses a lush canyon and climbs steadily to panoramic views over the range, so your dog will experience both shaded forest and open ridgeline.

Many people extend their visit by continuing on the Backbone Trail another 2.75 miles across Upper Solstice Canyon to Corral Canyon Fire Road if they want a longer outing. The main hike to the gate near Castro Peak is 3.8 miles out and back with 650 feet of elevation gain. It’s a solid morning workout without being overwhelming.

Getting to the trailhead takes some attention to detail since the parking area is unmarked. From PCH in Malibu, drive 7.3 miles inland on Latigo Canyon Road. After passing Upper Ramirez Motorway, turn right into a dirt pullout—watch your odometer to find it. If you’re coming from the 101 Freeway in Lost Hills instead, take Kanan Dune Road south for 6.8 miles, then turn left onto Latigo Canyon Road heading east and drive three miles to reach the same trailhead.

Dogs must stay on leash throughout. Bring water for both you and your dog since the trail can get hot, especially on the exposed upper sections. The parking area fills up on weekends, so an early start makes a difference.
