Shell Beach, along California’s Central Coast in San Luis Obispo County, has a two-mile out-and-back trail called Cave Landing that connects to Avila Beach along the coastal bluffs. It’s just north of Pismo Beach, and it’s one of those hikes where you get actual ocean views the whole way—not a glimpse at the end, but consistently.
The trail itself is well-maintained and accessible enough that dogs of different ages can handle it without drama. You’re walking along the edge looking down at Pirates Cove and the Pacific, and the path is straightforward enough that you’re not scrambling over rocks or worrying about your dog’s footing constantly. It’s the kind of place where even an older dog or one that’s not a serious hiker can still have a good time.
What matters practically: the trail has waste stations along the way, which is helpful since you’re on a coastal bluff and not near facilities. Dogs need to be leashed here, though there may be designated off-leash areas nearby depending on current regulations—worth checking when you arrive since these things change. The sea breeze is constant, which is nice in summer but can get chilly, so consider bringing a layer. There’s also no shade to speak of, so if you’re going on a hot day, either go early or bring extra water. Your dog will want water too after walking on the exposed bluffs.
The main thing that makes this hike different from other coastal trails is how consistently good the views are. You’re not hiking through trees hoping for a vista point. You’re basically walking along the edge the whole time with something worth looking at. On a clear day you can see far down the coastline. On foggy days it feels moody and atmospheric rather than blocked. It’s a straightforward walk that gives you genuine scenery without requiring technical hiking skills or miles of commitment.
