Cerro San Luis Trailhead

Fernandez Road, San Luis Obispo, California 93405

Located in San Luis Obispo on the Central Coast, the Cerro San Luis Trailhead is a straightforward spot to access if you’re coming from downtown. Head south toward the 101 and turn right onto Fernandez Road just before you’d merge onto the southbound on-ramp at Marsh Street. Dogs need to stay on leash here, which keeps things manageable on the narrower sections of trail.

The Lemon Grove Loop is the main draw—a moderate 2-mile round trip that climbs to about 500 feet. It’s not a strenuous hike, so you’re looking at roughly an hour to complete it, which gives you time to actually notice what’s around you instead of just grinding through miles. The views open up as you gain elevation, and the trail itself is pretty straightforward to follow without needing a detailed map.

The landscape here feels different from what you get at beachside parks in San Luis Obispo. You’re in more of a scrubby, oak-dotted terrain with some grassland sections. It’s genuinely quiet most weekdays, and the peak elevation keeps things cooler than walking around the downtown area. The trail doesn’t have technical scrambles or anything that would be uncomfortable for a dog, so even if your dog isn’t a serious hiking athlete, this works fine as a midweek outing.

The trailhead parking area is fairly small and fills up on weekends, so going earlier in the day is wise if you want a spot without hassle. Bring water for both of you—there’s nothing along the route itself. The area can get dry and dusty in summer, so paw-wise you might want to check your dog’s feet afterward, especially if they’re not used to rocky terrain.
