Clikapudi Trail sits about 9 miles east of Shasta Lake City, offering direct access to some impressive views of the lake and surrounding mountains from the trailhead at Jones Valley Boat Ramp. The well-marked path works for both casual walkers and experienced hikers, so you can choose your own level of effort depending on what your dog can handle that day.
The scenery is genuinely worth the drive—sunrise and sunset bring out the best in the panoramic views of the lake and mountains, and the terrain itself stays interesting as you work your way through. That said, this is a dry hike. There’s no drinking water along the trail, so you’ll need to bring plenty for both you and your dog, especially important during hot summer months when the heat can get intense. Start early and pack more water than you think you’ll need.
Dogs are allowed in the recreation areas, though they need to stay on leash, particularly in developed sections where you’ll encounter other visitors. It’s worth checking on any specific regulations for different sections of the trail before you go, just to know what to expect.
The Jones Valley Boat Ramp has decent parking, so you shouldn’t have trouble finding a spot. Once you finish the trail, the shoreline around Shasta Lake makes for a nice cool-down walk, or you could claim a spot for a picnic in one of the nearby recreation areas. The whole setup works well for a full day outing where your dog gets both the hiking experience and some downtime by the water. Just come prepared for sun exposure and lack of water sources along the way, and you’ll have a solid day out there.
