Coal Creek Open Space Preserve in the hills above Redwood City and Portola Valley, San Mateo County, offers a serene escape for dog owners seeking outdoor adventures in the San Francisco Bay Area. With a variety of trails that can be combined for a pleasant two- or three-mile loop, this preserve is an ideal spot for a quick afternoon hike with your dog. The open grassland ridges below the Caltrans vista point parking area provide stunning views of the Bay Area, creating a picturesque backdrop for leisurely strolls. Managed by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, Coal Creek invites visitors to explore its scenic landscapes and enjoy the tranquility of nature.

Dogs are welcome on designated trails within Coal Creek Open Space Preserve but must be kept on a leash of six feet or less at all times. It is important to note that the Coal Mine Ridge portion of the preserve does not allow dogs, so be sure to check the trail map before setting out to plan a dog-friendly route. A popular option is the 2.4-mile loop that connects the Meadow Trail and Alpine Road, which meanders through grassy meadows and offers sweeping views of the surrounding hills. For a shorter outing, a 0.9-mile out-and-back trail near the vista point parking area is a lovely choice for a quick leg-stretching session with your pup.

One of the highlights of hiking Coal Creek with your dog is the variety of terrain and scenery packed into a relatively compact area. A 1.7-mile loop winds through shady oak woodlands and features a small seasonal waterfall with views of the South San Francisco Bay — a refreshing reward after climbing the gentle hills. Crazy Pete’s Trail takes you through a canopy of trees, and just under a mile into the hike you will cross a small bridge over a charming waterfall. The trails are mostly well-maintained and moderate in difficulty, making them accessible for dogs of varying fitness levels. The shade provided by the oak woodlands is especially welcome on warmer days, keeping both you and your dog comfortable.

The preserve is located between Portola Valley and Los Altos, just off Skyline Boulevard south of Highway 84. Parking is available at the Caltrans vista point on Skyline Boulevard, which serves as the main trailhead. This dog-friendly preserve offers a refreshing retreat. For more information on trail maps, parking, seasonal conditions, and other amenities, visitors can contact the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District at (650) 691-1200 or visit their website at www.openspace.org.
