Coit Tower

1 Telegraph Hill Blvd, San Francisco, California 94133

(415) 362-0808

The grounds of Pioneer Park surrounding the iconic Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill offer stunning 360-degree views of San Francisco, and leashed dogs are welcome to explore the trails that wind around the tower and down the hillside. The tower itself is currently closed to visitors, but the park more than makes up for it with plenty of space to walk and take in the scenery.

One of the best parts about visiting with your dog is the wildlife you’ll encounter. The neighborhood’s famous parrot flock—made popular by the 2005 documentary “The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill”—hangs around the area, and watching them swoop and chatter while your dog takes in the sights adds a unique dimension to your visit. The birds are worth the trip on their own.

If you want to make the outing more strenuous, tackle the Filbert Street Steps on Telegraph Hill’s eastern slope. You’ll climb through some genuinely beautiful terrain, including the Grace Marchant Garden with its lush greenery and vibrant flowers. It’s a solid workout, and the views improve as you gain elevation. The Greenwich Street Stairs offer a less demanding alternative—a gentler climb through a charming residential neighborhood where you can admire the architecture while your dog sniffs the sidewalks.

Bring water for both of you since there aren’t many amenities up here, but there are plenty of spots to stop and rest while soaking in the views. Parking at the tower is tight, so arriving early or using public transportation is your best bet. The trails are well-maintained and fairly easy to navigate, though the stairs can be steep in places. On weekends, the park can get crowded with people and other dogs, so if you prefer quieter walking, a weekday visit works better. The combination of the views, the parrot sightings, and the actual exercise makes this one of San Francisco’s better dog outings.
