Cook’s Beach sits just north of Gualala along Highway One, and it’s one of those spots where you can actually let your dog have real fun in the water without worrying about restrictions. The access is straightforward — when you’re heading north on Highway One and pass mile marker 3.14, turn left onto Route 526, the old Coast Highway. The beach entrance comes up quickly on your right, and there’s parking nearby so you don’t have a long walk to the sand.

The Bonham Trail gives you another way to reach the beach if you want a proper hike. Either way, you end up at a genuinely sandy stretch where dogs can actually run without immediately hitting rocks. The water here is cold like all Northern California beaches, but plenty of dogs don’t seem to mind that part. The waves can get rough depending on conditions, so it’s worth watching your dog if they’re not a strong swimmer.

What made the biggest impression on me was how peaceful it feels. You don’t get the crowds you find at more famous beaches, which means your dog gets more space to explore and fewer dogs to navigate around. The sunset views are genuinely worth timing your visit for — the light hits the water beautifully in the late afternoon, and there’s something about watching it from a nearly empty beach that makes the drive north feel completely worthwhile.

The beach itself is fairly exposed, so wind can pick up in the afternoon. If you’re planning to spend a few hours here, go in the morning when conditions tend to be calmer. Bring fresh water for your dog since you won’t find much at the beach itself. The nearby town of Gualala has a few places to grab food if you want to make a longer day of it.
