Cook's Meadow Loop in Yosemite National Park is a picturesque one-mile trail that offers stunning views of iconic landmarks such as Half Dome, Glacier Point, and Royal Arches. This easy loop takes approximately 30 minutes to complete, making it a manageable outing for dogs of varying fitness levels. The gentle terrain and smooth walking surface work well for older dogs or those less accustomed to hiking.
To start, head to the Valley Visitor Center and follow the bike path west toward Lower Yosemite Fall. You’ll notice the well-maintained path right away—it’s clearly marked and easy to navigate. As you walk, the meadow opens up with those famous granite backdrops filling your view. Your dog will appreciate the variety of scents and the open space to take in the surroundings without feeling rushed.
The loop is open year-round, though winter visits require caution. Snow and ice can make the trail slippery, so check conditions beforehand if you’re planning a cold-weather visit. Spring and fall tend to offer the best combination of clear trails and comfortable temperatures for extended time outside.
Dogs must stay leashed throughout the park to protect wildlife and other visitors. The meadow area itself is peaceful enough that most dogs settle into a calm walking pace, especially after the initial excitement of arriving in Yosemite. If your dog tends to pull or gets easily distracted, the wide path gives you plenty of room to manage comfortably.
After finishing the loop, there’s a nice meadow area where you can sit for a bit if you want to linger. Bring water for both of you—the trail itself has limited shade, and even on cooler days, the sun reflects off the granite. Pack out what you pack in, including any waste from your dog.
