Crystal Lake Trail is a picturesque 3.2-mile out-and-back hike located in Mammoth Lakes Basin that delivers real payoff for the effort—especially if you’re bringing a dog who’s up for some elevation gain. The trail starts with a noticeable climb right away, which sets the pace for the whole experience. You’re looking at moderate difficulty overall, but those views start coming into focus pretty quickly, and the surrounding landscape opens up in a way that makes the huffing and puffing worthwhile.

About a mile in, you’ll hit a fork where the trail splits. From here, you can head toward Crystal Lake itself or veer toward Mammoth Crest if you want to keep climbing for even bigger vistas. Either direction gives you that Eastern Sierra experience—alpine terrain, distant peaks, and the kind of quiet you don’t get everywhere. Dogs seem to genuinely enjoy this hike. The trail conditions are generally solid, and while there’s elevation involved, it’s not so technical that you’re worried about paw placement the whole time.

The best part is how accessible this feels as a morning or afternoon outing from Mammoth. You’re not spending all day getting to and from the trailhead, so you can actually enjoy time on the mountain without feeling rushed. Bring water for both of you—there’s not much shade on portions of this trail, and at this elevation, dehydration happens faster than you’d think. The panoramic views really do justify the climb, and your dog will likely be just as happy exploring the rocky areas and sniffing around the alpine vegetation as you are taking photos. Most dogs finish this without issue, though make sure yours is comfortable with sustained elevation gain before heading out.
