Deer Island Open Space

320 Deer Island Lane, Novato, California 94945

(415) 473-2816

Deer Island Open Space sits just minutes from Highways 101 and 37, but once you’re on the trails, the noise fades entirely. This 135-acre preserve rises above eastern Novato in what used to be part of the Petaluma River Delta wetlands, and while it’s no longer technically an island, the peaceful ridge-top views make you feel removed from the busy corridors nearby. The main loop is relatively level and manageable at 1.8 miles, making it an easy choice for a morning or evening walk with your dog.

Dogs need to stay leashed here, though they’re welcome on all the trails. The fire protection roads allow off-leash walking under strict voice control if your dog responds reliably. Either way, there’s plenty to see. Spring brings wildflowers like ground iris and shooting stars across the grasslands, and you’ll spot various butterfly species throughout the year, many dependent on the surrounding marsh habitat.

The preserve has real history woven into it. Weathered outbuildings from its dairy farming days still stand near the entrance, remnants of when this was working agricultural land. There’s also archaeological evidence of seasonal Miwok settlement here. The small farmhouse near the parking area is being converted into offices for the Parks & Open Space Environmental Education Program, so you might see some activity there.

Bring water for yourself since there’s none available on-site. The small parking area sits right by the Open Space sign at the end of Deer Island Lane, which you’ll reach by taking the Atherton Avenue exit east, turning right on Olive Avenue, then left on Deer Island Lane. There’s no fee to visit. Summer can bring foxtails, so check your dog’s paws carefully after hiking during those months. The trail is pleasant year-round, and because it’s easy terrain without much elevation gain, it works well even on days when you don’t have hours to spare.
