Dog PPL occupies a full city block in Santa Monica with actual grass underfoot—a rarity that makes a difference on paw pads and gives the park a less industrial feel than many LA dog parks. The fencing is solid and substantial, and the layout naturally separates small and large dogs into distinct zones, so you’re not navigating around 80-pound dogs if you’ve got a ten-pounder in tow. Shade exists but isn’t abundant; the park sits in an open area with some mature trees along the perimeter. The small-dog section is genuinely small-dog scaled, not just a corner of a larger space. The terrain is straightforward and flat, with good drainage, so even after rain the park stays usable.
Off-leash play is permitted throughout both the small and large dog areas. Water stations are scattered around the grounds to keep dogs hydrated. There is no admission fee. The park stays open dawn to dusk, though it closes occasionally for maintenance and special events—check the website before visiting, especially on weekends. Bring your own waste bags since dispensers aren’t always stocked.
During morning hours before 10 a.m. and late afternoon after 4 p.m., the park thins out noticeably; midday heat and lunch crowds tend to keep it busy but manageable. Timing your visit to avoid the peak weekend lunch hour works well if your dog prefers calmer company. The location on Ocean Park Boulevard puts you a short distance from the Santa Monica Pier area and Main Street’s shops and restaurants—several of which have patios where leashed dogs are allowed. Parking is available along Ocean Park Boulevard and in nearby residential streets, though Saturday and Sunday mornings fill up quickly.
