El Estero Park Complex is a 45-acre recreation area in central Monterey that works well if you’re bringing your dog along while someone in your group wants to hit the Dennis the Menace Playground. The playground itself is the main draw for families with kids—it’s got those whimsical structures from the comic strip, and while they’re climbing around, you can walk your dog through the park’s green spaces on leash.
The park’s layout gives you real room to move around. The walking paths are well-maintained and wind through nicely landscaped areas, so you’re not stuck on a single loop. If your dog likes to sniff around, there’s plenty of that kind of space here. The park does require dogs to be on leash, which is standard for most of the facilities in Monterey. On a clear day you get decent views, and there are picnic areas scattered throughout if you want to sit for a while and let your dog rest in the shade.
One practical thing: bring water and a bowl. There’s no shade everywhere, and Monterey sun reflecting off the park can be stronger than it feels at first. The park sits close enough to downtown Monterey that you can grab lunch nearby if you want something beyond a picnic. A few dog-friendly cafes aren’t far off if you’re looking for a post-walk coffee or snack.
The main reason to come here is really that combination of dog-friendly walking space plus the playground for kids. If you’re solo with a dog or traveling with just adults, you’d probably find more engaging options elsewhere in Monterey—somewhere with more dog-specific amenities or more interesting terrain. But as a place where the whole group can get outside at once, with kids and dogs both occupied, it does the job without feeling cramped. Just time your visit to avoid peak playground hours if crowds bother your dog.
