One of San Diego County‘s most precious natural resources, Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve offers approximately 11 miles of hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails winding through chaparral and oak woodlands. The reserve also has picnic areas and scenic mountain viewing points with views across the valley. It’s a substantial property, so you’ll want to plan which trails work for your dog’s energy level and your schedule.
The off-leash rules here are specific and worth understanding before you go. Monday through Friday, dogs under effective voice command can run off leash, but only at the top of the “Way Up” Trail where there’s a marked sign. That’s the only spot for off-leash hiking on weekdays. The “Way Up” Trail itself and all Lower Trails require dogs to stay on leash at all times. On weekends and holidays, leash requirements apply throughout the entire reserve.
Beyond the trails, dogs must be on leash in parking areas, picnic areas, and at the overlooks. If your dog becomes a nuisance around other people, property, wildlife, or domestic animals, a leash is required regardless of the day or location. California leash law is enforced, and the reserve asks that you pick up after your dog.
The weekday off-leash option at the top of “Way Up” makes this appealing if you have flexibility to visit during the week and your dog has reliable recall. The trail system itself is well-developed enough that you can spend a couple hours exploring different sections. Even with leash restrictions on weekends, it’s still a solid spot for a half-day outing with good elevation changes and open views. Just go in knowing the specific rules for the day you’re planning to visit.
