Ernest Holman Memorial Dog Park sits just a couple blocks from the Sonoma Police Station in downtown Sonoma, a quarter-acre of fenced space where dogs can run off-leash without worrying about traffic or wandering off. It’s small enough that you can keep an eye on your dog the whole time, which is nice if yours tends to be shy or overly social with other dogs.

The park has actual shade from mature trees, so even on hot afternoons it stays relatively cool. There are picnic tables and chairs scattered around, which means you can actually sit down and watch instead of standing on the sidelines for thirty minutes. Trash cans are placed throughout, so at least the cleanup part is easy.

The ground is well maintained and doesn’t get too muddy even after rain, making it comfortable for dogs to actually run and play without slipping. The whole setup feels like someone actually thought about what would make this work for both dogs and their people. You’ll typically see a mix of dogs here—everything from high-energy young labs to older dogs who just want a sniff around and some gentle socializing.

Since it’s right in downtown Sonoma, it works well if you’re already in the area visiting the town square or grabbing lunch. It’s not the kind of massive regional park where you can spend three hours, but for a quick morning or evening session to let your dog move around and interact with others, it does the job well. The compact size means the same regulars show up fairly often, so if your dog is a repeat visitor, they’ll start recognizing faces. Just plan for a shorter visit rather than an extended outing.
