Felton Covered Bridge Park sits along the San Lorenzo River in the redwood-dotted hills of Santa Cruz County, and the centerpiece is genuinely distinctive—a wooden covered bridge that’s one of the few remaining in California. Walking across it with your dog feels like stepping into another era, especially with the river flowing below and the massive redwoods towering overhead.
The park itself spreads across generous grounds with several good reasons to stay for a while. There’s a wide grassy area where you can throw a ball or just let your dog run around, and picnic tables are scattered throughout if you want to settle in for lunch. The BBQ facilities work well if you’re planning something more substantial. A playground keeps kids occupied, and there’s volleyball if your group is into that. The paths are easy to walk, so it’s manageable even if your dog isn’t a serious hiker.
If anyone in your group fishes, the San Lorenzo River runs through the park and fishing is allowed with proper licensing. It’s calm and pleasant, the kind of spot where you can actually relax while keeping an eye on your dog nearby. The restroom facilities are clean and helpful, which matters on longer visits.
Dogs are genuinely welcome here without restrictions that I ran into—they don’t need to be on-leash everywhere, though you’ll want to use common sense around other visitors and the bridge itself. The redwoods provide good shade even on warm days, and the combination of the bridge, river, open grass, and forest creates enough variety that most dogs find something interesting to investigate.
The park is free to enter, and parking is right there at the entrance. It’s a genuine stop if you’re driving through the Santa Cruz Mountains rather than a destination you’d plan a full day around, but that doesn’t diminish how pleasant it actually is when you visit.
