Flanagan Trail

Flanagan Trail

Redding, Redding, California

Flanagan Trail in Redding climbs 2.5 miles through moderate terrain with views from Chamise Peak that really open up once you get higher. The dirt paths connect to the Upper Sacramento Ditch Trail if you want to extend your hike, so there’s flexibility depending on how much time and energy you and your dog have. The trail itself is straightforward to navigate and gets decent foot traffic, which means the path stays pretty clear. This is a solid spot for dogs that can handle a moderate workout. The elevation gain isn’t brutal, but it’s noticeable enough that you’ll both feel like you actually did something.

The views from the peak make the climb worthwhile—Shasta Cascade scenery in all directions, the kind of vista that makes you stop and actually look around instead of just trudging forward. On clear days the vista extends impressively across the northern California landscape, and the changing light throughout the day really transforms what you’re seeing. The northern California landscape at this elevation does something special—different vegetation, different quality of light than you get further south.

Bring plenty of water. There’s nothing on the trail—no restrooms, no fountains, no shade structures—so you’ll need to carry enough for both of you. On warmer days, this becomes especially important. Pack it in, pack it out for waste. The trail also allows bikes, so don’t be surprised if you encounter riders, though it’s not so popular that you’ll feel crowded.

Keep your dog leashed throughout. Wildlife uses these trails too, and a leash keeps everyone safer and more respectful of the land. The trail is genuinely dog-friendly in the sense that there aren’t artificial restrictions, but that’s exactly why responsible hiking matters here. If you’re in Redding and looking for a hike that doesn’t require a long drive but still feels like actual wilderness, Flanagan gets you there in maybe fifteen minutes from downtown. Parking is at the trailhead on Flanagan Road.
