Franklin Canyon Park sits right between the San Fernando Valley and Beverly Hills, offering some genuine quiet in the middle of the city. The 605 acres feel genuinely removed from Los Angeles, even though you’re never far from the urban core. Your dog needs to stay leashed, but that’s a small trade-off for access to some really varied terrain.
The trails here wind through woodlands and grasslands, with enough elevation change that you can pick either an easy walk around the lake or something more demanding if you want it. The lake itself is one of the best features—it’s peaceful, surrounded by native plants, and gives the whole place a feel that’s more like hiking in a natural preserve than a city park. On weekends, you’ll see plenty of other dogs around, so it’s a good spot if yours enjoys canine company on the trail.
The landscape shifts noticeably as you move through different sections of the park. Early mornings are genuinely quieter, though the parking lots do fill up by mid-morning on nice days. The trails are well-maintained, and you won’t find yourself bushwhacking or second-guessing where you’re supposed to go. Southern California light filters through the canyon in a way that makes even a short hike feel restorative.
Bring water for both of you—there’s shade along most trails, but the sun gets intense in summer, and you’ll be working harder than a stroll. The lake water isn’t drinking-water quality, so don’t count on that to cool your dog down. The park has basic amenities and parking is free, which makes it easy to drop in without planning a major expedition. The MRCA website has trail maps if you want to scout things out beforehand.
