Freedom Dog Park sits on the edge of Pleasant Valley Road with a view toward open Ventura County hills—the kind of backdrop that makes you realize you’re close enough to suburban infrastructure but far enough removed from the density. The park sprawls across a decent footprint with distinct sections that let you calibrate how much chaos you want your dog encountering on any given visit.
Dogs run off-leash in the main area, and leashes are required in the designated small-dog section if you have a nervous or toy-breed dog. There’s no entrance fee. Water stations are scattered throughout, which matters if you visit during the warmer months (May through September heat here can be real). The park fills up heaviest on weekend mornings and early evenings; weekday mid-afternoons stay much quieter. The terrain is mostly flat with some low-lying brush, and while there are a few trees dotted around, the sun exposure is substantial, so bring water and plan your timing accordingly during summer.
The grounds drain reasonably well after rain, though muddy patches can linger in the lowest sections. Parking is directly off Pleasant Valley Road with dedicated spaces, so you won’t be hunting. Trails nearby—the Ojai Valley Trail is about five minutes away if you want something with actual elevation and distance for post-park hiking. The park runs from dawn to dusk. Bring poop bags; the park provides stations but running out is common on busy days. If your dog is reactive or still working on recall, hit it early on weekdays when the crowd thins and you can focus on whatever training or socialization work you’re doing.
