Fremont Peak State Park

10700 San Juan Canyon Road, San Juan Bautista, California 95045

(831) 623-4255

Fremont Peak State Park sits about 1,200 feet above San Juan Bautista, which means the drive up gives you a real sense of elevation before you even step out of the car. Once you’re there, the views stretch across Monterey Bay and down into the valleys below — it’s genuinely impressive, especially on clear days when you can see for miles. The park itself has several hiking trails that wind through grasslands mixed with pine and oak woodlands, so you’re not just walking on exposed hillside the whole time.

Dogs are allowed on the designated trails throughout the park, which is the main draw here. The trails vary in difficulty and length, so you can pick something manageable if you’ve got an older dog or go for a longer hike if your dog has serious stamina. The landscape changes as you move through different elevations, so even if the park isn’t huge, there’s enough variety to keep a walk interesting. You’ll pass through open grassland sections that get pretty hot in summer, then into shaded wooded areas that provide relief.

The park does have facilities like picnic areas, which is nice if you want to bring supplies and take a break. Summer afternoons get warm up there, so starting early or going in spring or fall makes the hike more comfortable for your dog. The trails aren’t overly technical, but they do climb, so bring water for both of you. There’s also a small visitor area near the peak itself where you can stop and take in those bay views without continuing on a full trail.

If you’re in the San Juan Bautista area and want to get some elevation and actual scenery without a complicated drive, this works well. The combination of open ridgeline hiking and wooded sections gives you variety in a relatively compact space.
