Glacier Point

Glacier Point Rd., Yosemite Valley, California

Glacier Point gives you one of those views that makes the drive worthwhile—you’re looking straight out at Half Dome, Yosemite Falls dropping from the cliffs, and the entire valley floor spreading below you. The road gets closed most of the year, so you’re really working within a window from late May through October or early November, depending on snow.

The drive itself is scenic enough that it’s not just about reaching the endpoint. You’ll climb through different elevations and forest types on the way up via State Highway 41, and the parking area at the top can get crowded during peak summer afternoons—worth knowing if you prefer a quieter experience. Arriving earlier in the day or visiting in early spring or fall when crowds thin out makes a real difference.

If you’re into hiking, Glacier Point works as either a starting point or finish line for some of Yosemite’s bigger trails. The Four Mile Trail drops down from here if you want to descend into the valley, while the Panorama Trail is another popular option that gives you multiple viewpoints as you work your way down. These aren’t casual walks—they’re proper hikes with elevation change—but starting from Glacier Point’s vantage point means you see what you’re looking at before you navigate it.

Winter access is different entirely. From mid-December through March, cross-country skiers can reach the point after skiing 10.5 miles in, which is a completely different experience from the car route. It’s quieter, more meditative, and the snow-covered landscape changes how everything looks. If you’re into skiing and want to see the view from a different angle, that’s worth planning ahead for.

Bring water and snacks regardless of when you visit—the overlook itself has minimal facilities, and you’ll want to spend time actually looking at the view rather than rushing back.
