Godwin Trail is a serious 14-mile hike that demands respect, starting from a roadside parking area southeast of Mecca near the All American Canal. Getting here means driving east from Indio on I-10, taking the 86 Expressway toward Brawley, then navigating through farmland on 62nd Avenue and Johnson Street until you reach 66th Avenue, also called Box Canyon Road. You’ll pass grape and citrus ranches before parking several hundred yards before the Painted Canyon sign, just past where the road crosses the All American Canal.
The route follows Canal Road, which runs atop the dike immediately north of the canal itself. You’ll turn left and head east along this path for what becomes a 6-hour commitment with 200 feet of elevation gain. Don’t let the elevation gain fool you — 14 miles is a long day, and the terrain out here is exposed and relentless. The early morning start isn’t just recommended, it’s essential. You want clear skies and cool temperatures before the desert sun becomes brutal. Late afternoon hikers on this trail are making a dangerous choice.
The landscape here is stark and remote, with irrigation canals and agricultural areas giving way to genuine desert as you progress. This isn’t a trail for casual hikers or dogs who haven’t trained for distance. Your dog needs to be conditioned for strenuous activity and comfortable with minimal shade. Water availability is limited, so you’ll need to carry everything you might need. Bring more water than you think necessary for both of you.
The trail offers solitude and big views across the agricultural valleys and desert terrain, but only if you respect what it demands. Check conditions before heading out, especially in warmer months when midday temperatures make this hike genuinely unsafe.
