The Golden Gate Promenade stretches 4.3 miles along the San Francisco Bay shoreline, running from Crissy Field west to Fort Point and the Golden Gate Bridge. It’s an easy walk that works equally well for a casual stroll or a more active outing with your dog, since you can jog, bike, or rollerblade the paved sections too.
The views are genuinely striking—you’ll see the San Francisco skyline, Marin Headlands, and the bay waters throughout. One of the best parts is Crissy Marsh, a salt marsh where you’ll spot various bird species if you’re into that. The trail itself is well-maintained and includes beach access in several spots, which gives your dog a chance to splash around if they’re interested.
As you head west toward the bridge, you’ll pass some repurposed airplane hangars that now serve as recreation facilities, which adds visual interest to the walk. The route also takes you past historic coastal gun batteries—remnants of the area’s military history. These architectural elements break up what could otherwise feel like just a straightforward bay walk.
Bring water and a bowl for your dog since amenities are sparse along the route. The trail’s mix of paved pathways and natural areas means it’s accessible regardless of fitness level, though the fog can roll in quickly, so a layer helps. Some sections have specific leash requirements, so it’s worth checking current pet policies before you go.
The promenade works well as either a full 4.3-mile commitment or a shorter out-and-back from Crissy Field if you want to keep it brief. The paved pathways make it manageable even if your dog isn’t a hardcore hiker, but there’s enough natural scenery and water access to make it feel like a real outing rather than just a neighborhood walk.
