Grandview Park, located in the Sunset District of San Francisco, offers a unique hilltop experience for both locals and visitors. This park features a dune-plant community and a network of trails leading to the summit, providing stunning panoramic views of the city and the Pacific Ocean. The ascent to the top is mainly through wooden stairs, offering a challenging yet rewarding workout for hikers and their dogs.

The climb takes real effort—you’re gaining elevation steadily through those stairs—but the payoff is genuinely impressive. Once you reach the summit, the trails transition to soft, sandy soil, creating a different kind of walking experience where you can move more freely. On clear days, you get views that stretch all the way across the Bay Area, and the mix of native plants gives the park its own distinct character compared to other San Francisco hills.

Two sets of stairways provide access, including a concrete one at 15th Avenue, making the park easily reachable depending on which neighborhood you’re coming from. The wooden stairs are the main route most people take, and they’re well-maintained though steep in sections. The dune ecosystem is something you won’t see at every city park—the sandy areas feel almost like you’ve left the urban core behind, even though you’re still within the Sunset District.

The wind can pick up at the summit, especially in afternoon, so if your dog isn’t used to blustery conditions, plan your visit for earlier in the day. The soft sand near the top is easier on paws than pavement if you’re doing a longer visit. Most people spend anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour here depending on pace and how long you want to linger at the views. Bring water for your dog since there aren’t fountains at the summit.
