The Hearn Gulch Trail sits in what locals call the “banana belt” of the southern Mendocino Coast—the warmest, sunniest stretch around Gualala. If you’re exploring this part of Mendocino County and want a coastal walk that doesn’t eat up your whole day, this is a solid option. The trail itself is fairly easy overall, though you’ll encounter some steep and rough stairs on the way down that require a bit of careful footing, especially if your dog tends to rush ahead.
Spring is when the wildflowers really show up here, and the views open up nicely in both directions along the coast. You’ll get a sense of the actual landscape rather than just moving through trees. The payoff is a small pocket beach right at Hearn Gulch where you can walk along the sand and let your dog stretch out after the descent. It’s the kind of place where you can genuinely relax for a bit once you’re down there, not just snap a photo and turn around.
The biggest thing to keep in mind is those stairs I mentioned—they’re legitimately steep in spots, and they’re the main challenge here rather than distance or elevation gain spread across the whole route. If your dog is older or has any joint issues, take your time and let them set the pace. The scramble down is worth it for the beach access, which is the real draw. Most visitors find it manageable, but it’s not a walk where you can zone out the whole way.
Bring water for both of you since there aren’t any facilities at the trailhead. The Mendocino Land Trust manages this area and has more detailed information about trail conditions and maps if you want to check before heading out.
