Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park in Felton has miles of trails winding through old-growth redwoods and mixed forest, and while your dog can’t join you in the most protected old-growth areas, there’s plenty of park to explore together on leash.
The dog-friendly sections give you real options for different kinds of outings. You can do casual walks through more open areas with your dog alongside you, or tackle longer hikes if you’re up for it. The landscape shifts as you move through the park—dense redwood groves give way to sunny spots and creek-side trails. Because dogs need to stay leashed throughout the dog-accessible sections, you won’t have the freedom to let them roam, but the trails themselves are varied enough that it doesn’t feel too limiting. Picnic areas scattered around are also dog-friendly, so you can break up a hike with a snack and some rest.
The park’s location near Highway 9 makes it fairly accessible, and the setting feels genuinely remote despite being in Santa Cruz County. You’re surrounded by the kind of coastal California redwood forest that feels timeless, which is part of what makes it worth the trip even with the dog restrictions in certain zones.
If you’re camping at the park with your dog, keep in mind they’re allowed in vehicles and tents but can’t be left alone—early mornings and evenings when temperatures are cooler work best for leaving a dog in a car briefly while you’re nearby. Plan to keep your dog with you during the day rather than expecting to leave them unattended for long stretches.
The park website has detailed trail maps and current access information, which is worth checking before you go since trail conditions and dog restrictions can change seasonally. Bring plenty of water, especially on warmer days, since shade is abundant but you’re still working harder on uneven terrain.
