The Hudeman Slough Boat Launch sits in the Carneros region of southeastern Sonoma County, offering paddlers a quieter route into the tidal waterways that eventually connect to San Pablo Bay. It’s a remote spot managed by Sonoma County Regional Parks and owned by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife—the kind of place where you’ll see far fewer people than at the busier launch sites closer to town.
The launch accommodates non-motorized boats up to 24 feet, so kayaks and canoes work great here. There’s a modest parking lot with 20 spaces, which actually means you’re unlikely to arrive and find it packed. The real appeal is the water trail itself. Paddling along the slough gives you views across the marshlands, and it’s genuinely peaceful—you might spot herons, egrets, and other birds that thrive in this habitat.
One thing to know: the mud around the boat ramp is exceptionally soft and deceptive. It’ll sink under your weight in ways that won’t happen to the birds, so watch your footing when launching. That same mud displays excellent bird tracks though, which is interesting to see if you’re into wildlife observation. Bring sturdy shoes or water boots you don’t mind getting messy.
Your dog can come along on leash, which works well if you’re planning a paddling trip. They’ll need to stay put in the boat or on the bank while you’re out on the water, but the launch itself and surrounding area are dog-friendly. The drive out to this location takes you through wine country, so it’s worth combining with other Carneros-area activities if you’re making a day of it. Just time your visit with the tides if you can—tidal waterways behave differently depending on when you arrive.
