Hume Grove Loop, located in Pena Adobe/Lagoon Valley Park in Vacaville, is a 1.4-mile trail that winds through Jack Hume Grove’s majestic redwoods. The path is straightforward and well-maintained, making it accessible whether you’re looking for a quick morning walk or a more leisurely afternoon outing with your dog.
What surprised me most about this trail was how quiet it feels despite being so close to I-80. Once you’re under the canopy of redwoods, you really do leave the highway noise behind. The grove has a cool, shaded quality year-round, which is especially nice on warmer days. The trail itself is mostly flat and easy to navigate, so you don’t need a particularly athletic dog to enjoy it. I saw dogs of all sizes and ages making their way through without any trouble.
The park has picnic tables scattered throughout, so you could easily pack a lunch and take a proper break. There’s also a lagoon area nearby if your dog enjoys water, though the main loop stays pretty dry. The whole setup feels like genuine parkland rather than a manicured recreation area — it’s the kind of place where you can let your dog sniff around and explore without worrying constantly about rules and restrictions.
Parking is straightforward with a lot near the trailhead. The peak times tend to be weekends, but even then it doesn’t get uncomfortably crowded. If you’re in the Vacaville area and want something more interesting than a neighborhood park walk but less demanding than a serious hiking commitment, this loop delivers. Bring water for yourself and your dog, especially in summer months when the shade helps but the redwoods don’t provide any actual water sources along the route.
