Huntington Dog Beach

Huntington Beach Bike Trail, Huntington Beach, California 92648

(714) 841-8644

Huntington Dog Beach sits where a wide stretch of sand meets the Pacific, and the first thing you notice is how the beach itself becomes an extension of the dog park—no barriers, no pretense, just open space and water. Dogs sprint across hard-packed sand toward the surf, which is the real appeal here. Unlike most dog parks, this one offers genuine beach access, which means natural tide pools, salt water for rinsing off, and the kind of sensory overload that sends most dogs into a state of pure joy.

The park is off-leash throughout most of the designated area, with clear boundaries marked along the Huntington Beach Bike Trail. A separate fenced section accommodates small dogs and nervous swimmers, though the fencing is modest and the space feels more like a courtesy area than a full separate facility. The main beach is sand and shallow water; there’s no grass or decomposed granite here—it’s all natural shoreline. Shade is minimal, consisting of a few scattered picnic structures and the occasional umbrella from visitors, so bring sun protection and plan for early morning or late afternoon visits when temperatures drop and crowds thin. The beach is open sunrise to sunset year-round.

Peak times run weekends and summer afternoons, when the beach can feel packed with dogs and their owners. Parking sits along the bike trail with reasonable availability, though summer Saturdays require arriving early. The water temperature stays cool even in summer—expect high 50s to low 60s Fahrenheit depending on season—so not all dogs will be eager swimmers, but most will wade. Lifeguards monitor the area during daylight hours, and restrooms are available nearby. Bring fresh water to rinse salt from your dog’s coat after swimming, as the mineral content can irritate skin if left on too long. High tide reduces the usable sand significantly, so check tide charts before your visit.
