The 26-room Inn at the Presidio is the only hotel actually located within the Presidio, that stunning 1,500-acre urban forest and former military base that feels worlds away from downtown San Francisco. Built in 1903 as officers’ quarters, the building has been renovated to keep its historic bones while adding modern comfort. Dogs stay free here, and the rooms are designed with them in mind—ground floor and second floor options open directly onto broad verandahs where you can sit outside with your dog and look out over the manicured, tree-lined neighborhood.
The place has that understated Ralph Lauren aesthetic, all muted colors and tasteful military memorabilia on the walls. There’s a fire pit in the back courtyard where the inn serves complimentary wine and cheese in the afternoons, which is a nice way to meet other guests who’ve brought their dogs along. Breakfast is included with your stay—a proper buffet, not just coffee and a muffin—so you can fuel up before heading out for the day.
There’s no restaurant on-site, but that’s not really a problem. A short walk away you’ll find several places with dog-friendly patios where you can get lunch or dinner with your dog at your feet. The real draw here is what’s literally outside your door. The Ecology Trail starts nearby and loops 1.4 miles through different habitats, ending at Inspiration Point where you get real views of the Bay and the skyline. Beyond that, there are over 20 additional miles of trails throughout the Presidio itself, so you could spend days here just walking different routes through eucalyptus groves and open grassland without repeating yourself.
The Presidio has its own distinct feel—quieter and greener than the rest of the city. Staying here means you’re actually embedded in that landscape rather than just visiting it for an afternoon. Expect to see other dogs on the trails, especially on weekends, and bring water bottles for both of you since the trails can get exposed in places.
