Joaquin Miller Large Dog Park

The Joaquin Miller Large Dog Park sprawls across a hillside with actual topography—your dog won’t be trudging in circles on flat ground. The main off-leash area climbs gently through oak woodland, giving dogs room to chase without feeling like they’re in a parking lot. On a weekday morning, you’ll see maybe a dozen dogs moving between the tree-shaded upper section and the more open lower area, which means real running space and actual play rather than constant dog-to-dog collision.

The park separates large and small dogs, so your dog gets matched company. The surface is mostly grass and decomposed granite, which drains reasonably well but gets dusty in summer and can turn boggy after rain—bring a towel or rinse station in mind. A small water fountain sits in the parking area, though it’s worth carrying extra in hot months. The large dog section is fully fenced, and the small dog area sits closer to the parking. Hours run sunrise to sunset, and the park clears out noticeably after 6 p.m. on weekdays. Peak congestion hits weekend mornings between 9 and 11 a.m.

The setting is genuinely different from most Bay Area dog parks because you’re actually in a redwood and oak forest, not a cleared field. Shade matters here—even at midday, the upper section stays cool. The park sits on the eastern edge of Joaquin Miller Park, and if your dog still has legs after the off-leash area, the main park’s hiking trails connect directly. Sanborn Drive leads uphill from the neighborhood below, and the parking area is small but usually has spots except during peak weekend times. Summer afternoons are hot even with shade, so early morning or late afternoon works better. The Friends of Joaquin Miller Park volunteer group maintains it regularly, so you’ll notice kept trails and generally clean grounds.
