Joie de Vivre Hospitality, now the largest operator of boutique hotels in California, has a rich history that began in 1987, when Stanford graduate Chip Conley took a leap of faith on a run-down motel in the Tenderloin district. This humble property, rebranded as the Phoenix, initially attracted visiting rock bands, garnering significant media attention and setting the stage for Conley’s vision of revitalizing other neglected San Francisco hotels. Each hotel was infused with a unique “psychographic” personality and theme, which has now expanded to encompass 30 hotels throughout California and one in Arizona, catering to a diverse range of budgets and tastes.

For dog owners, Joie de Vivre offers a selection of seven pet-friendly hotels in San Francisco, including the Galleria Park, Hotel Carlton, Hotel del Sol, Hotel Kabuki, Hotel Rex, Hotel Vitale, and Laurel Inn. Beyond the city, dog-friendly options extend to the East Bay with the Hotel Durant and Waterfront Hotel, as well as the serene Carmel Valley Ranch in Monterey County. Two Silicon Valley properties, Hotel Avante Mountain View and Wild Palms Hotel, also welcome dogs. The chain has also developed properties in other California locations, providing even more opportunities for travelers seeking accommodations that embrace their canine companions throughout the state.

One of the standout features of JDV’s pet policy is the absence of weight or breed restrictions, which means that dogs of all shapes and sizes can join their owners on vacation. There are no additional charges for pets at these welcoming properties, making it easier for travelers to bring their dogs along without worrying about extra fees. Many of the dog-friendly hotels provide thoughtful amenities such as cozy dog beds, food and water bowls, and playful toys, ensuring your dog feels right at home during the stay.

When planning your visit, contact the specific hotel directly about their current pet policies, as offerings may vary by location and season. This approach helps ensure you get the most accurate information about what’s available for your particular trip and allows you to ask about any special requests or needs your dog might have.
