The Lake George Path in Mammoth Lakes is a short but pleasant walk that works well if you’re based in the Lakes Basin area and want to get your dog out for some easy movement. The trail runs just a third of a mile and connects to the Lakes Basin Path between Lake Mary and Lake Mamie, so it’s more of a connector than a destination hike on its own.
Leashed dogs are allowed, which is standard for the area. The path itself is well-maintained and relatively flat, making it manageable for dogs of various ages and fitness levels. You’ll pass by the Pokonobe Marina on Lake Mary, and the Lake Mary Campgrounds are nearby if you need a spot to rest partway through. The setting is quiet and tree-lined in spots, with good views of the lake when the path opens up.
What makes this useful is its location in the larger Lakes Basin network. If you’re doing a longer day exploring multiple lakes in the area—maybe combining it with walks around Lake Mamie or heading over to Lake Mary proper—you can piece together a more substantial outing without repeating the same stretch. It’s also convenient if you’re staying at Lake Mary Campgrounds and want to get your dog moving without driving somewhere new.
The elevation is around 8,900 feet, so even though it’s short and easy, keep in mind the altitude if your dog isn’t acclimated. Bring water, especially in summer when afternoon heat can make even brief walks uncomfortable. The trail can get busy on weekends since the Lakes Basin is popular with hikers from Mammoth, but the short length means crowds tend to thin out away from the main parking areas.
