Lake McClure

Lake McClure Rd., Mariposa, California

(855) 800-2267

Lake McClure, spread across Mariposa County in the Sierra Nevada foothills, is a solid spot if you want to spend a day on the water with your dog. The lake itself and its neighboring Lake McSwain give you plenty of room to explore—fishing, boating, swimming, and just hanging out on the shore are all viable options depending on what you’re in the mood for.

Dogs are welcome here, which is the main thing. You can let yours splash around in the water, run across the sandy areas, or hit one of the trails that circle the lake. The views while you’re doing any of this are genuinely nice, with the Sierra foothills as your backdrop. If your dog isn’t a water dog, the hiking around the lake gives you a quieter way to spend time. Just bring plenty of fresh water for them—the sun reflects off the water and gets intense, especially in summer.

The practical side: there’s ample parking, picnic areas where you can set up with food and your dog, and the facilities are kept in decent shape. This means you can realistically spend a full day here without feeling like you’re roughing it. You’re not paying for some fancy experience, just getting access to a lake and the space to use it.

A couple of things to keep in mind. Check on current pet policies before you go, since those can shift. Bring a leash to stay compliant with regulations, even if there are stretches where your dog might have more freedom. The lake gets busy on weekends, so if you prefer a quieter experience, aim for weekdays or off-season months.

The drive from Yosemite isn’t bad if you’re in that area and want a water-based day trip, or it works fine as a destination on its own if you’re staying in Mariposa.
