Lewis Falls

Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, Azusa, California 93553

(800) 862-2543

Lewis Falls Trail in Azusa is a short, manageable hike that takes you to a real waterfall—something you don’t always get this close to in Los Angeles County. The trail itself is only about half a mile, which makes it realistic for a morning outing with your dog, especially on a warm day.

You’ll find the trailhead about 2.2 miles past Coldbrook Campground if you’re coming up from the valley. The path works for different fitness levels, so you don’t need to be a serious hiker to get there. What surprised me was how green everything stays along the creek, even when the surrounding hills look dry. The waterfall itself is modest but genuine—the kind of spot where you actually hear water running and feel like you’ve left the urban sprawl behind, even though you’re still in the LA area.

Dogs on leash are welcome here, which matters if you’re planning a trip where your dog gets some real exercise. The trail itself stays relatively cool because of the tree cover and proximity to the creek. During warmer months, the shade becomes a real advantage. The walk is straightforward enough that you’re not making complicated navigation decisions, so you can focus on the scenery and your dog instead of constantly checking a map.

The whole experience is low-pressure—it’s not a destination that requires half your day, but it’s also not just a parking lot stroll. If you’re already up in the San Gabriel Mountains area for other reasons, it’s worth the detour. Just keep in mind that this is a popular spot, especially on weekends, so arriving early works in your favor if you prefer quieter trails. Bring water for your dog since the creek water isn’t necessarily safe to drink.
