Limekiln State Park sits along the Big Sur coast in Monterey County, and it’s one of those places where you can actually bring your dog on the trails without restriction headaches. The park spans 29 developed campsites tucked along Limekiln Creek and near the beach, so you’ve got real choices depending on what kind of trip you want—creek-side camping under redwoods or closer to the sand.
The main draw here is how much there is to do in a relatively compact space. There’s a short, manageable hike to Limekiln Falls, which drops 100 feet and feels genuinely special. The beach access is straightforward, and your dog can wade through the creek that runs down to the shore. If you’re into redwood forests, the trail system winds through old-growth trees that make the air feel different—cooler and somehow quieter. The park also preserves four historic limekilns from the 1880s, which you can see on the trails. They’re weathered stone structures that give you a tangible sense of the area’s past without feeling like a museum exhibit.
One thing to know: this is Big Sur, so it gets crowded during peak season and the weather can shift quickly. Bring layers, even if the forecast looks perfect. The beach is rocky in spots, which is fine if you have a dog with normal paw tolerance, but bring booties if your dog is sensitive. Camping fills up fast on weekends, especially in summer.
The creek is the real magic here though. It’s cold and clear, and both you and your dog will spend time wading through it on the way to the falls. Bring good hiking shoes or sandals that dry quickly—you’ll be crossing the creek multiple times. The whole setup feels less polished than some state parks, which is exactly why it works so well.
