This trail is managed by the Conejo Recreation & Park District through the Conejo Open Space Foundation, and it’s one of those hikes where you actually feel like you’ve gone somewhere by the time you’re done. The 4.25-mile loop with about 750 feet of elevation gain keeps things interesting without being brutal, making it good for dogs with moderate fitness.

Starting from the Los Padres trailhead, you’ll walk through riparian woodland that’s genuinely shaded and cool—a real relief on warmer days. The canopy protects you and your dog from direct sun for much of the early section. The trail then connects to Los Robles Trail, where things open up. Heading west through the meadow, you’ll gain elevation as you cross over the hill toward the picnic table area. This is where you get views and a chance to catch your breath. The exposed sections can be hot, so bring extra water if you’re going on a weekend when it’s crowded.

On the way back, you’ll reverse toward the Scenic Overlook Trail before returning to the trailhead. This route gives you some elevation variety without feeling repetitive—you’re seeing different terrain in each direction. The Scenic Overlook section lives up to its name and breaks up the return hike nicely.

Getting there is straightforward. From the 101 freeway, head south on Moorpark Road for about 0.3 miles, then turn left on Los Padres Drive and go roughly 50 yards. The trailhead is on your right, and you’ll park on the street. Arrive early on weekends if you want a spot close to the entrance, especially if you’re worried about leaving your dog in the car for any length of time. The trail can get busy on nice days, so morning visits mean fewer people and cooler conditions for hiking.
