MadeWest Brewing Company started when two Ventura natives who’d been friends forever decided to open a brewery together. Their whole approach centers on quality handmade craft beer and what they call the spirit of California—that mix of adventure, creative thinking, and genuine love for the outdoors. You can tell that philosophy shapes everything here, from the beer selection to how they’ve set up the space.
The Donlon Brewery & Taproom is the dog-friendly location (their pier spot doesn’t allow dogs). The tasting room and patio both welcome well-mannered, leashed dogs, which means you’ve got options depending on the weather and your dog’s preference. I’ve seen people set up at the outdoor tables with their dogs relaxed on the ground beside them while they work through a flight of IPAs or whatever seasonal release caught their attention.
The main thing to understand is that MadeWest takes the dog policy seriously—they want it to work for everyone. Your dog needs to be genuinely comfortable in a busy taproom environment and respect the space. If your dog is reactive with other people or dogs, or if you can’t keep them consistently under control, this probably isn’t the right spot. Staff will step in if there’s an issue, and they will ask you to leave. But if you’ve got a solid, calm dog who’s been socialized around groups of people and other animals, this is a genuinely nice place to spend an afternoon. The beer is good, the staff knows what they’re doing, and the vibe feels like exactly what they set out to create—people gathering around something they care about in a casual Ventura setting.
