Del Mar, located in San Diego County along the California Coast, has welcomed dogs since its incorporation in 1959 and maintains that tradition today. The entire two-plus mile stretch of Main Beach allows dogs on leash for nine months of the year—basically everything except summer peak season from mid-June through mid-September, when restrictions kick in. If you’re planning a visit outside those summer months, you’ve got plenty of room to explore with your dog.

The beach itself is wide and sandy with a gentle slope into the water, making it accessible for dogs of varying comfort levels around waves and swimming. The coastline here tends to be less crowded than some Southern California beaches, which means more space for your dog to move around without constant encounters with other visitors. The nearby neighborhoods and coastal bluffs add to the scenery if you want to walk beyond the main beach area.

Beyond Main Beach, Del Mar’s commitment to dogs extends to its two major parks. Seagrove Park and Powerhouse Park both allow dogs during those same nine months, so you have options if you want a break from sand or prefer a more contained space. The city’s overall dog-friendly stance means you’ll find accommodations and services geared toward visitors traveling with dogs.

Keep in mind that the leash requirement is strictly enforced, so leave the off-leash fantasies for designated dog parks. Also, plan your timing carefully if you’re visiting in summer—those restricted months aren’t arbitrary, as Main Beach gets genuinely packed during tourist season and the heat can be intense for dogs on a crowded beach. Spring and fall offer the best balance of pleasant weather and fewer crowds, making them ideal times to bring your dog for a proper coastal outing.
