Mammoth Creek Park in Mammoth Lakes sits right in town, making it an easy stop when you’re exploring the Eastern Sierra. The park is open mid-May through early November, depending on snow melt and weather, so it’s worth checking conditions before you head over with your dog.

What makes this place work well for dogs is the mix of different terrain and water access. There’s open grassy space where you can let your dog run around and play fetch, shaded areas under the trees if you need a break from the sun, and best of all, the creek itself. On warm days, the shallow areas are perfect for wading—most dogs seem to enjoy cooling off in the water, though the flow varies depending on the season.

The park has standard amenities like picnic tables scattered throughout, so you can settle in for a while if you want to grab lunch. There’s playground equipment too, which is useful if you’re traveling with kids alongside your dog. The creek runs through the whole property, so you’re never far from water even if your dog just wants to drink.

The shaded sections along the creek are particularly nice on hot summer days. The elevation here is around 8,000 feet, so even mid-summer afternoons tend to be cooler than lower elevations in California. If you’re coming from the valley, this is a noticeable difference.

Access is straightforward since it’s in town rather than requiring a drive out to a trailhead. That said, the park does close seasonally, so if you’re planning a fall visit, call ahead to confirm it’s still open. Winter snow typically closes it down fairly early. The creek’s water level drops as summer progresses too, so if wading is important for your dog, aim for June or July when flow is highest.
