McNee Ranch State Park

Highway 1, Montara, California 94037

McNee Ranch State Park, on the southern flank of Montara Mountain, offers magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean and the San Mateo County coast. This rugged coastal park is a fantastic destination for dog owners who enjoy a good workout with their pup, as trails here range from easy strolls to strenuous summit climbs. Dogs are welcome on all roads and trails unless otherwise posted, and must be kept on a leash of six feet or less at all times.

Hiking here is through exposed country along wide, multi-use fire roads. Expect to share them with cyclists (some of them going very, very fast on the downhills) and equestrians. The terrain is mostly open grassland and coastal scrub, so there is limited shade — bring plenty of water for both you and your dog, especially on warm days.

The eight-mile, partial loop trip to the summit of North Peak, elevation 1,898 feet, is strenuous, with about 1,800 feet of elevation change. This challenging route rewards you with sweeping panoramic views of the Pacific coastline, the Farallon Islands on clear days, and the ridgelines stretching south toward Half Moon Bay. It is nearly a five-mile one-way hike to the top, so plan accordingly and make sure your dog is fit enough for the climb.

Shorter trails are available for those seeking a less demanding outing. For something quick and easy, take the Gray Whale Cove Trail north from the main trailhead. This roughly one-mile trail features a moderate grade with mild inclines on each end, and you can retrace your steps for a pleasant two-mile round trip. A rest bench along the way is the perfect place to fill your lungs with fresh air and contemplate the views while your dog takes a breather beside you.

McNee Ranch is open to hiking, biking, horseback riding, and leashed dog walking. Most trails are multi-use, though two trails are designated as hiking only. The park is located between Pacifica and Half Moon Bay, making it an easy day trip from San Francisco or anywhere on the Peninsula. The coastal scenery here is spectacular year-round, with wildflowers in spring, golden hillsides in summer, and dramatic fog and cloud formations rolling in from the ocean.

Directions: From Highway 1, check your odometer at the Linda Mar traffic signal in Pacifica. Drive about four miles south and look for the small parking lot on the right side of the road. The trailhead is not well marked, so GPS assistance can be helpful. For more information, call (650) 728-8239 or check with the Coastside State Parks Association for current trail conditions and any seasonal closures.
