Meadow Trail cuts through Henry Cowell Redwood State Park just outside Felton, offering 15 miles of hiking through towering redwoods, mixed evergreens, and riparian zones that feel completely different depending on which section you explore. Dogs are welcome here, which is the main draw for a lot of people visiting with their pups.
The key thing to know upfront: dogs must stay on leash the entire time, and Meadow Trail is one of the few trails in the park where they’re actually allowed. Other interior trails and roads are off-limits for dogs, so check which path you’re planning before heading out. The main trail itself is well-maintained and gives you plenty of shade under the canopy, which matters a lot on warmer days.
Bring more water than you think you’ll need. There aren’t many water sources along the way, and your dog will appreciate frequent breaks in this terrain. Some people bring collapsible bowls specifically for this reason. Snacks help too—nothing fancy, just something to keep your dog’s energy up for the full hike.
If you’re planning to stay overnight, there’s a campground at the park, but dogs can’t be left unattended in your tent or car. That’s a real limitation if camping is part of your plan. The picnic area is dog-friendly though, so that works for a day trip break.
The drive from San Jose takes you through the Santa Cruz Mountains on Highway 17 toward Santa Cruz, then to the park entrance. Once you’re there, the redwood forest feels immediately removed from everything else—the temperature drops and the light changes in that distinctive way old-growth forests have.
If you want a substantial hike with your dog in genuine old-growth redwoods rather than replanted forest, this is worth the drive. Just plan to spend most of your time on Meadow Trail specifically since that’s your actual option with a dog in tow.
