Mile Rock Beach

Lands End Trail, San Francisco, California 94121

Mile Rock Beach in San Francisco offers a peaceful setting for a leisurely stroll with your dog while exploring the natural beauty of Lands End Park. This beach has a collection of rocks and driftwood where your dog can play off-leash once you’ve navigated the terrain.

To reach the beach, start on the 1.5-mile Lands End Coastal Trail from the parking area. Once you pass the third bench on the trail, you’ll spot a path leading down the cliff towards Mile Rock. There’s a 243-step staircase descending to the beach, and some sections are genuinely tricky underfoot, so keep your dog on a leash during the descent for safety. The stairs themselves are worth the effort—they’re dramatic and feel a bit removed from the city despite being right in San Francisco.

Mile Rock Beach is known for the stacked rocks left by visitors over the years, creating informal cairns across the landscape. The beach itself is small and rugged, scattered with boulders and driftwood that create natural play structures. During high tide the shore is narrow, but when the tide is out, your dog can enjoy running around the boulder-covered beach with much more room to explore. The rocks here are genuinely interesting to navigate, and most dogs find the varied terrain engaging.

Head further inland from the beach and you’ll come across the Lands End Labyrinth, an intriguing stone structure fashioned like a maze. It offers a unique perspective of the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance. The entire area sits on the southern edge of the Golden Gate along the central shores of Lands End Park. The combination of the beach itself, the labyrinth, and the coastal trail makes this a substantial outing—plan for at least two hours if you want to experience everything the area offers without rushing.
