One of the most unique features in Monterey County is the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail, an 18-mile paved path that stretches from Castroville in the north all the way down to Pacific Grove in the south. This is genuinely one of the best dog walks in the area—flat, well-maintained, and packed with things to see without having to navigate heavy traffic.
The trail works perfectly for dogs of any fitness level. You can do a short mile or two near Fisherman’s Wharf, tackle the whole thing over several visits, or pick any section in between. Commuters and locals use it constantly, so your dog will see plenty of other people and dogs, which is great for socialization. The path itself takes you past Cannery Row, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, several beaches and parks, historic sites, and straight through Downtown Monterey. Each stretch has its own character, so it never gets boring even if you’re walking the same section multiple times.
What really makes this trail special for dogs is the wildlife. You’ll spot harbor seals lounging on rocks, sea otters floating in the water, sea lions hauling out on the docks, birds everywhere, and if you’re lucky, whales breaching offshore. Your dog will love the sensory overload of smells and sights, and it’s genuinely exciting stuff to watch. Even on a slow day, there’s plenty to keep both of you entertained.
Several businesses along the route rent bicycles, kayaks, and other equipment if you want to vary your routine, though the walking and dog-walking options are really the main draw. The trail gets busy during peak times but there’s plenty of room for everyone. Just remember to keep your dog leashed and clean up after them—both things the regular users are pretty serious about. The best part is you can start almost anywhere along the route and work your way through Monterey’s waterfront at your own pace.
