Monterey State Beach

Del Monte Ave. at Park Ave., Seaside, California 93955

Monterey State Beach in Seaside spans a significant stretch of Monterey County coastline, but you’ll need to know where dogs are actually allowed before you head out. The key dividing line is the Monterey Beach Resort hotel—dogs on leash are welcome south of the resort, but north of it, dogs aren’t permitted at all. This matters because it’s easy to end up in the wrong section if you’re not paying attention, so scope out where you’re parking before you arrive.

The dog-friendly section south of the resort has the kind of beach most dogs love: wide sandy areas where they can dig, chase, and splash in the water. The surf is generally gentle, which is good if your dog is nervous about bigger waves. You’ll see plenty of people out here with their dogs during cooler months, particularly in the morning before it gets crowded. The beach itself is long enough that you won’t feel cramped even on busy days.

Seaside’s location gives you easy access to the broader Monterey Bay area if you want to extend your trip. The Del Monte Beach area is close by, as are various walking routes through town. There are a few casual spots where you can grab food afterward—nothing fancy, but there are places that will let you sit outside with your dog while you eat.

The main thing to remember beyond the dog policy: bring fresh water. The salt water access is great for cooling off, but your dog will need to drink fresh water afterward. Bring a bowl or use a bottle designed for dogs. Also pack more waste bags than you think you’ll need—the beach community takes this seriously, and you’ll see signs reminding people about it. Mornings tend to be less crowded and have better parking near the dog-friendly section, which makes it easier to get your dog down to the water without a long walk across hot sand.
